A non-profit organization in the U.S. is a legally recognized entity that operates for purposes other than generating profit for its owners or members, such as for charitable, educational, religious, or scientific causes. Its income is not distributed to individuals but is instead used to support its mission and operations. Non-profits are often granted tax-exempt status by the US Internal Revenue Service, with the most common type being a 501(c)(3).
The US Internal Revenue Service designates non-profit status for organizations through the 501(c)(3) designation because their missions are charitable, educational, religious, scientific, or literary in nature. Donations made to a 501(c)(3) are tax-deductible for the donors, which is a significant incentive for individuals and corporations to contribute.
A non-profit registered agent is a designated company that serves as the official point of contact for a non-profit organization to receive legal and official documents from the state, such as tax forms and other legal correspondence. This agent must have a physical street address in the state where the non-profit is registered and is required to promptly forward these essential documents to the non-profit, ensuring they don’t miss critical deadlines or legal notices.
The governance of the Belmont Forum Foundation comprises a three- to five-person board of directors, who report to the Belmont Forum Steering Committee and the Belmont Forum members.

The process to establish the Belmont Forum Foundation began in February 2025. The organization was incorporated in Delaware on 13 June 2025 and formally received U.S. IRS approval of non-profit status on 20 October 2025.
